What is Somatic Work?

Past experiences and traumas can leave lasting effects on your body and mind. These can shape your perception, and influence your relationships with yourself, others, and the world around you.

They can keep parts of you trapped in the past.

The body needs time and space to express these entrapped feelings to stop your suffering in the present.

Somatic work can help you navigate and heal what your body is holding onto.

F.A.Qs

What would my first somatic therapy session look like?

Your first session will be us sitting comfortably, and take our time to get used to tuning into signals from your body. These are known as 'felt sense'. It's strange at first, so needs practice. We work very slowly, stopping and starting as we need to. Getting used to the pace and what it feels like to listen to the body.

What does a somatic therapy session look like?

We will pay attention to your body's signals, keeping it slow, and stopping anytime you like. We may include slow movements as we follow your body's feedback. We will be constantly communicating, tracking the sensations, and looking for signs of re-regulation. These maybe vary from subtle to intense, all are welcome and encouraged. We may use a variety of methods to suit client need in the moment. Meaning we can move more, using the space in different ways. Or swap to integrate fascia work on the couch.

What can somatic therapy help with?

Somatic trauma therapy can help to process and let go of what we hold on to after any kind of experience that our system couldn't deal with in a healthy way at the time. It doesn't matter if it was so long ago you can't remember, or if you've had talking therapy about it already.

These can include..

  • Childhood trauma

  • Abusive relationships

  • Loss and abandonment

  • Sexual, emotional, or physical abuse

  • Physical or emotional neglect

  • Assault or accidents

  • Stress

  • PTSD

What are signs of trauma in the body?

  • Anxiety

  • Inability to show and process emotions in a healthy way

  • Poor emotional regulation

  • A feeling of numbness, heaviness, emptiness, or unsettled in the body

  • Autoimmune and inflammatory health issues

  • Not being able to clearly recall chapters of life/events that were distressing

  • Physical pain

  • Unable to 'feel'

  • Avoidance of activities

  • Addiction

  • Tense, stiff body

  • Lack of self confidence

Marie-Louise is such a wonderful person and somatic therapist. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to have 1:1 sessions with her as they have had such a positive impact on me.  They have helped to release trauma and then calm and ground me - such fantastic results.
Marie-Louise creates such a safe and supportive environment, which really enabled me to work through some powerful releases. Thank you. I thoroughly recommend Marie-Louise

M-L has been training me for years and she has the X-factor of personal trainers: she can motivate and get you to work harder just by enthusiasm. Results and fun is a good combination.

Marie-Louise is brilliant and I would 100% recommend her Somatic Trauma Healing practice.
Not only does she understand and master the correlation between the physical and emotional, but creates an environment that feels safe and encouraging to explore and expand in ways I have not found with talking therapies.
Several sessions in and I already feel a profound difference in my body and mind as well as a sense of optimism for the future.

Marie-Louise is a great therapist! I have been getting regular treatments for over a year now due to back pain from previous injury alongside being in a very sedentary job.
I have never before found someone who is able to find the pain points so quickly and immediately know what to do to relieve the pain! She's also so friendly and makes you feel really comfortable and always uses the time effectively to make sure you get the most out of your money!
Having been to various therapists, osteopaths and acupuncturists in the past, I would now never swap to anyone else! I would highly recommend!
